Angiosperms:

These are the most evolved plants, among plant kingdom.

General Character:

Angiosperm-type


·         Most advanced flowering plants.

·         Closed seeded or fruit bearing plants.

·         Worldwide distributed.

·         May be herb, shrub or tree.

·         May be annuals, biennials or perennials.

·         Well-developed sporophytic plant body.

·         Differentiated into root, stem and leaf.

·         Vascular bundle well developed, with xylem and phloem.

·         Almost all dicot show secondary growth.

·         Flowers contain Male sex organ- antheridium and female – Gynoecium.

·         Pollen grain produce male gamete, Gynoecium contain- Egg.

·         Transfer of pollen grain is pollination, occurs by various means.

·         Egg present inside ovule, gets fertilized to produce zygote.

·         After fertilization, Ovary develop to Fruit, Ovule- seed and Zygote – embryo.

·         Food store in endosperm.

·         Fruit formation only occurs in Angiosperm.

Angiosperms again divided to Monocots (~ 1495 G and 18576 Sp.) and Dicots (~ 2610 G and 31874 Sp.)
